Emily in the City

I've recently becoming obsessed with Sex and the City. Like, devouring nearly two whole seasons in two weeks, obsessed. I can't help it though - the show hooks you right away!

I know I'm late (really really late) to the Sex and the City (or SATC, as all the cool kids abbrev it) obsession, but you have to understand - I wasn't even a preteen when this show started airing on HBO. It's run, from 1998-2004, would be ending as I turned 12 - thus I was no where near the age bracket this show was marketed to.

But that doesn't stop me from being obsessed with it now!

I can see why there are so many rabid fans of this series (and two movies spun off from the series finale). While sex is prominent (as it is in the title), what draws me in is the friendship and camaraderie of the four main characters - Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda and Samantha.

These girls are intoxicating, fascinating and REAL. I can see a little of each of them in myself - and in all of my friends. They are three dimensional characters with three dimensional relationships and friendships - and that is what is so intriguing in a era where most television shows have two dimensional characters and plot lines at best. (Jersey Shore, Secret Life of the American Teenager - I'm looking at you!)

I haven't gotten far enough in the series to figure out which "one" I am - but so far I'm leaning towards Carrie. Somehow, I feel like we are the same person in a lot of ways.

Aside from the friendship and the sex - the fashion in this series is phenomenal. Seriously - it's all it's been cracked up to be, and I am obsessed already with several pieces I've seen in episodes so far. I can see how Carrie's nameplate necklace and other trends have sparked from the series - everything about it screams New York City cool (in the most effortless, nonchalant, chic way).

Plus, each girl has her own unique style. Miranda is conservative and tailored, Charlotte is classic and feminine, Samantha is sexy and sensuous, and Carrie is all over the map...and always over the top, yet impeccable. There's always something on the screen to lust after - clotheswise, of course!

If you've never watched SATC before, or if you've only watched it casually, or if you just haven't watched in a really long time - I highly recommend sitting down and watching an episode (or six, or lets be honest - a season). The banter, the fashion, the friendship - and yes, even the sex - make this show a must watch and a feel-good pick when your feeling down.

Summer by frecklegrrl featuring low rise shorts

I've got less than two weeks - and counting - until I'll be back home, ready to start my summer, my "big-girl" job and decide where I'm going to university next year (stay or transfer?). My family's coming down in just a few days to visit and help move me back, and I couldn't possibly be more excited to see them(!!). 

I'll be living in different combinations very similar to this for my last few days in Florida. It is ridiculously hot and humid here, so I can barely pull on anything else! Plus, this gives me the necessary mobility for playing around the parks without worrying about giving anyone a free show. The hat is definitely necessary to keep the sun off my (already a little sun-burnt) face. 

It's become my "Last Two Weeks in Florida" uniform...what's your summer uni? 

Saturday Reads

Currently reading, and obsessing over, Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men. Unlike about 98% of schools nationwide, we didn't cover it in elementary or high school, so I decided to give it a try now. I absolutely adored Steinbeck's Travels with Charley so I have high hopes for this short novel. I'm about a third of the way through, and I am definitely intrigued.

I've got only two weeks left on my internship with the Walt Disney Company down in Orlando, Florida. It's crazy to think that a semester has flown by so fast!

I Love Pandora

I CANNOT stop listening to my latest Pandora stations - "Anyone Else But You" Radio and "All I Want Is You" Radio. What can I say - I've been a Juno-(500) Days of Summer kind of place lately, so this is what has been playing throughout my apartment. It's perfect music for blogging, scavenging the internet for interesting things, cooking, reading and even cleaning.

I also love Pandora stations because, while it would probably be easier to just stream the soundtracks from my iTunes, I get to discover new music that I surely fall in love. It happens every time - no matter what the original station is.

I Met a Storybook's Worth of Characters

I was busy as a bee today - I met twenty-five characters in the Magic Kingdom in less than five hours. I feel accomplished - what did you get done today?

"I'm just going to be me, whoever that is." - Bob Dylan

This quote inspires me and has influenced my life more than just about any quote I can think of. In fact, it was one of two senior quotes when I graduated high school last year. (The other came from the song La Vie Boheme from the musical Rent - also known as my favorite musical ever - "To days of inspiration, playing hooky, making something out of nothing, the need to express, to communicate, to going against the grain, going insane, going mad.") 


I have very little in my life figured out - and I am the first to admit that. My future is an abyss, but instead of being dark and looming, it is a loud and colorful cacophony of ideas and possibilities. It excites me more than words can express, even though it is incredibly frightening at times. 


With this quote, Bob Dylan unwittingly reminds me that it's okay that I'm still exploring and don't have anything figured it - the reassurance I definitely need when everyone around me has a set path and passion. I have lots of ideas, thoughts and interests - and I'm striving to balance them all. 


That's where this blog comes in. 


I've always been a bit envious of niche bloggers and people who have their passions and interests organized into an identity. Face it - its all around us, whether through the internet or in real life - we all have friends (or at least acquaintances, or perhaps even bloggers) with singular passions, whether it be music, fashion, literature, sports - what have you. 


I've never been like that - and I have a string of failed niche blog attempts to prove it. This blog (AKA Emily Unedited) is the anti-niche - a place where I can put all my thoughts, interests, commentary and obsessions in one place. I've decided to stop fighting my multiple interests and let them grow here - a place that's going to be as as diverse as my personality, a home to everything I find fun, interesting and exciting - which is just about everything.
